Technical questions test whether you understand AI/ML concepts well enough to explain them to customers and handle technical objections during sales cycles.
1. Explain how a transformer model works to a VP of Engineering evaluating your product.
This tests your ability to explain complex technology at the right level for the audience. Do not recite the "Attention is All You Need" paper. Explain the practical implications: how attention mechanisms allow the model to process context, why this matters for the customer's use case, and what the limitations are. Adjust depth based on who is asking.
2. What is RAG and when would you recommend it over fine-tuning?
This is asked in nearly every AI SE interview in 2026. RAG is faster to implement, works with up-to-date data, and avoids the cost and complexity of fine-tuning. Fine-tuning is better when you need the model to learn a specific style, domain vocabulary, or behavior that cannot be achieved through retrieval alone. Know the trade-offs: cost, latency, accuracy, and maintenance burden.
3. A customer says your model is hallucinating. How do you diagnose and address this?
Show a structured approach: identify the type of hallucination (factual error, unsupported claim, format error), check if the context provided to the model contains the correct information, review the prompt for ambiguity, and propose solutions (better retrieval, tighter prompting, confidence thresholds, human-in-the-loop review). Do not dismiss the concern. Acknowledge that hallucination is a real limitation and explain how your product mitigates it.
4. Design an architecture for a customer who wants to classify 10 million support tickets per day using your AI product.
This tests system design thinking. Start with requirements: latency per ticket, accuracy target, language support, integration points. Design the pipeline: ingestion, preprocessing, classification (batch vs. real-time), output routing, monitoring. Discuss scale considerations: batch processing for throughput, caching for repeated patterns, async processing for non-urgent tickets. Show awareness of cost: inference at 10M tickets/day is expensive, so discuss optimization strategies.
5. What are the key differences between GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini for enterprise use cases?
Do not give a biased answer if you are interviewing at one of these companies. Show balanced knowledge: each model family has strengths in different areas (reasoning, code generation, long context, multimodal). Discuss practical differences: pricing models, rate limits, data privacy policies, fine-tuning availability, and enterprise security features. This question tests whether you can have an honest competitive conversation with a customer who is evaluating multiple models.
6. How do embeddings work and why are they important for AI applications?
Explain embeddings as numerical representations of text (or images, or other data) that capture semantic meaning. Similar concepts have similar embeddings, enabling semantic search, clustering, and recommendation. Discuss vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, Chroma) and how they enable fast similarity search at scale. Connect to practical use cases: document retrieval for RAG, customer similarity for personalization, anomaly detection.
7. A customer asks about the security of sending their data to your API. Walk them through your answer.
Cover encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+), data handling policies (is data used for training? retention periods?), SOC 2 compliance, data residency options, VPC peering or private endpoints for sensitive workloads, and audit logging. Show that you understand the customer's concern is not abstract. They are asking because their legal and security teams will block the deal if the answers are not satisfactory.
Demo Questions
8. You have 45 minutes to demo our product to a Fortune 500 CTO and their engineering team. How do you structure it?
First 5 minutes: recap the customer's pain point and what you will show. Next 25 minutes: structured demo showing the product solving their specific problem with three use cases of increasing complexity. Final 15 minutes: questions and next steps. Explain that you would prepare by researching the company's tech stack, building a custom demo environment with relevant data, and rehearsing to stay within time.
9. During a live demo, the model produces an obviously wrong answer. What do you do?
Do not panic or try to hide it. Acknowledge the error: "This is a good example of why evaluation and guardrails matter in production." Explain why it happened (insufficient context, edge case, ambiguous prompt). Show how the product handles errors in production (confidence scores, fallback logic, human review). Turn the failure into a trust-building moment. Customers trust SEs who are honest about limitations more than SEs who pretend everything is perfect.

This is a take-home or preparation exercise. Show a working system: ingest past support tickets, build a classification layer (ticket category, urgency, sentiment), generate draft responses using a language model, include a human review step for edge cases, and measure response quality. The demo should tell a story: before AI (manual, slow, inconsistent) vs. after AI (automated, fast, quality-controlled). Include realistic metrics: response time reduction, resolution rate improvement, agent productivity gains.
Business and Deal Strategy Questions
11. A Fortune 500 bank wants to use your product for fraud detection. The CISO has data privacy concerns, the ML team thinks they can build it in-house, and the budget owner needs ROI by Friday. How do you handle this?
Break it down by stakeholder. For the CISO: prepare a detailed security architecture review, offer a BAA or DPA, explain data handling specifics. For the ML team: acknowledge their capability but position your product as faster time-to-value (months vs. years to build internally) with ongoing model improvements they would have to maintain themselves. For the budget owner: build an ROI model based on fraud losses prevented, analyst time saved, and false positive reduction.
12. The AE wants you to demo a feature that is on the roadmap but not shipped yet. What do you do?
Do not demo vapor ware. Explain to the AE why this is risky: if the feature ships late or differently than expected, the customer will feel misled. Instead, describe the feature direction during the conversation ("We are investing in X capability") without showing a fake demo. Offer to set up a follow-up demo when the feature ships. If the deal depends on this feature, work with the AE to set appropriate expectations and include delivery timelines in the contract.
13. You are supporting five deals simultaneously. Two need POCs this week. How do you prioritize?
Prioritize based on deal size, win probability, and strategic value. The $500K deal with a strong champion and clear path to close gets priority over the $100K deal with an unclear decision process. Communicate the prioritization to your AEs transparently. Explore whether the lower-priority POC can be delayed by a week, whether another SE can assist, or whether a lighter-weight evaluation (recorded demo, sandbox access) can substitute for a full POC.
14. A customer's technical champion just left the company mid-deal. How do you recover?
Immediately identify who else at the customer has context on the evaluation. Check if your AE has other contacts. Reach out to the champion's manager or the project team to understand whether the initiative continues. Offer to re-brief the new point of contact. In the short term, the deal is at risk. In the long term, multi-threading (building relationships with multiple stakeholders) prevents single-point-of-failure situations like this.
Behavioral Questions
15. Tell me about a POC that failed. What happened and what did you learn?
Choose a real example. Describe the situation, what went wrong (overly broad scope, data quality issues, unrealistic accuracy targets), what you did to manage the fallout, and what you changed in your process afterward. Interviewers want to see self-awareness, accountability, and the ability to learn from failure. The worst answer is "I have never had a POC fail."
16. Describe a time you had to push back on a customer's technical requirements.
Show that you can say no constructively. Frame the pushback as serving the customer's best interests: "They wanted X, but based on their data and timeline, X was not feasible. I proposed Y as an alternative that met their core need within their constraints." Show the outcome: the customer agreed, the deal progressed, and the alternative solution delivered value.
17. How do you stay current with AI technology?
Be specific. Name the publications you read (AI research summaries, company engineering blogs, Hacker News, ArXiv Sanity), the communities you participate in (PreSales Collective, AI/ML meetups), and the projects you build to stay hands-on. General answers like "I read a lot" do not differentiate you. Specific answers like "I follow the Anthropic research blog and build a side project with each new API release to understand the practical implications" show genuine engagement.
18. Tell me about a deal you lost and what you would do differently.
Every SE loses deals. Pick one where you can identify a specific mistake you made (not enough discovery, underestimated a competitor, failed to multi-thread). Show what you learned and how it changed your approach. Avoid blaming the AE, the product, or the customer. Interviewers look for ownership and growth mindset.
19. Give me an example of how you influenced a product decision based on customer feedback.
Describe the feedback pattern you observed across multiple customers, how you quantified it (number of deals affected, revenue at risk), how you presented it to the product team, and the outcome. This question tests whether you function as a customer advocate internally, which is a critical AI SE responsibility.
20. How do you handle a situation where the AE overpromises to a customer?
This tests your judgment and professionalism. Show that you address it privately with the AE first, not in front of the customer. Discuss the risk of the overpromise and propose a plan to set accurate expectations without undermining the AE's credibility. If needed, clarify capabilities during the next customer interaction using specific, factual language. Preserve the SE-AE partnership while protecting the customer relationship.
How to Structure Your Answers
For behavioral questions, use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep answers to 2 to 3 minutes. Lead with the result when possible ("We closed a $400K deal after I rebuilt the POC scope") and then explain the backstory. Interviewers remember results, not narratives.
For technical questions, start with the simplest correct explanation and add depth based on the interviewer's follow-up questions. Over-explaining a concept when a concise answer suffices suggests you do not know how to calibrate your communication for different audiences. This is exactly the skill that matters most in customer-facing AI SE work.

How many questions should I prepare for?
Prepare detailed answers for 20 to 25 questions across all four categories. Have 7 to 10 behavioral stories ready that you can adapt to different question phrasings. For technical questions, focus on understanding concepts deeply rather than memorizing answers. Interviewers can tell the difference between rehearsed responses and genuine understanding.
Should I practice answering questions out loud?
Absolutely. Practicing in your head is not the same as speaking. Record yourself answering questions and listen back. Time your answers. Practice with a friend or mentor who can ask follow-ups. The demo round requires presentation skills, and presentation skills require practice, not just knowledge.
What if I do not know the answer to a technical question?
Say so honestly. "I am not deeply familiar with that specific area, but here is how I would approach learning it" is better than a bluffed answer that the interviewer can see through. Follow up with what you do know about adjacent topics. Intellectual honesty is valued more than encyclopedic knowledge in AI SE interviews.
Are these questions the same at every company?
The categories are consistent. The specific questions vary by company. Frontier labs ask harder technical questions. Enterprise companies emphasize deal strategy. Startups focus on adaptability and breadth. Research the company's interview process on Glassdoor and Blind before your interview to calibrate your preparation.
How important is asking questions at the end of the interview?
Very important. Good questions demonstrate genuine interest and strategic thinking. Ask about the SE team structure, how SEs are measured, which products SEs support most, and what the biggest challenge for the SE team is right now. Avoid questions about PTO, benefits, or anything you can find on the company's website. Save compensation questions for the recruiter conversation.
